Google Business Profile optimization checklist for contractors

A 31-item checklist for contractors, ordered from suspension risk to relevance to monthly upkeep, with a clear test for when each item is done.

Definition: A Google Business Profile optimization checklist is an ordered list of the tasks that make your Google listing complete, accurate and compliant, with a clear test for when each task is done.

Main fact: This checklist has 31 items in seven groups. The first four protect the profile from suspension, so do them before anything else. Google says no one can pay for a better local ranking, so the checklist improves relevance and prominence signals and does not promise a map position.

What we do: You can run this list yourself. Aimarketify runs it for you inside every Google Business Profile optimization plan, from $1,000 a month.

How do you use this Google Business Profile checklist?

Work through the groups in order and tick an item only when its "done when" test is true. The order runs from suspension risk to relevance to ongoing work, which is our judgment about what costs the most if left undone.

  1. ProtectItems 1 to 4 confirm that the profile is unique, honest and verified.
  2. DescribeItems 5 to 14 tell Google what you do and where you work.
  3. ProveItems 15 to 25 add real photos and real reviews.
  4. MeasureItems 26 to 31 keep calls working and record results every month.

Each item starts with a box (☐) so you can print the page or copy the list into a spreadsheet. Where a step is Google's rule, the table says so. Where it is our advice, the table says "judgment".

How many items are in each part of the checklist?

The 31 items split into seven groups, and the core profile information is the largest group at 7 items.

The Google Business Profile optimization checklist puts the most items in core profile information, then in photos and reviews.

What should you check before you optimize anything?

Before you optimize, confirm that the profile is unique, uses your real name, has an eligible address and is verified. Optimizing a profile that breaks Google's guidelines wastes the work, because Google may suspend it.

ItemDone whenWhy, and the rule
☐ 1. No duplicate profilesA search for your business name and phone number shows one profile.Only one profile per business is allowed, and duplicates cause display problems.
☐ 2. Real-world nameThe name matches your truck, invoices and website exactly.Google requires the real-world name. Taglines, hours, phone numbers, URLs and location descriptors can lead to suspension.
☐ 3. Eligible addressThe address is a place where you really operate, or it is hidden and replaced by service areas.Virtual offices, P.O. boxes and remote mailboxes are not eligible. A business that does not serve customers at its address should remove it.
☐ 4. VerifiedGoogle shows the profile as verified and lets you edit business information.Review takes up to 5 business days. A postcard code usually arrives within 14 days and expires after 30. Do not change the name, address or category while you wait.
Check this first: If the profile was suspended or restricted, fix that before the other items. Read our guide to a suspended Google Business Profile for how to read Google's appeals tool and appeal once.

Which core information should every contractor profile have?

Every contractor profile needs a precise primary category, a few honest additional categories, named service areas, a working phone number, your website link and accurate hours.

ItemDone whenWhy, and the rule
☐ 5. Primary categoryYou picked the most specific category for the trade that earns most of your revenue.Google says categories affect local ranking. You cannot create your own category. Judgment: choose by revenue, not by the trade you want more of.
☐ 6. Additional categoriesEach extra category describes a service you really sell.Google says to use a few categories, not one for every service.
☐ 7. Service areasNo more than 20 named cities or postal codes, all places you serve.Google allows up to 20 areas and does not allow a radius. Its guide is about 2 hours of driving from your base. Approved edits can take up to 48 hours. See the service-area business guide.
☐ 8. Phone numberA number your team answers is listed.Google recommends adding a phone number. Customers reach you through the call button.
☐ 9. Website linkThe link opens the page that best matches your main service.Judgment: link to the page that fits your primary category, not to a page that makes the customer search.
☐ 10. HoursHours show when you answer calls and send crews.Google says hours should reflect regular customer-facing operations.
☐ 11. Special hoursHoliday hours are set before the holiday.Judgment: customers call on holidays, and wrong hours lose the call.

How should you set up services and the description?

List each service you sell by the name customers use, and write a plain description of what you do and where you work. Google does not allow links in the description, and promotions and prices should not be the focus.

ItemDone whenWhy, and the rule
☐ 12. ServicesEvery service you sell is listed once, in customer words, for example "furnace repair" or "roof replacement".Google profiles can show the services you offer. Judgment: customer wording matches how people search.
☐ 13. DescriptionTwo or three plain sentences say what you do, which trade you work in and which cities you serve. No links of any type, no focus on promotions, prices or sales. We did not confirm Google's current character limit, so check the field.
☐ 14. Match to the websiteEach main service on the profile has a matching page on your site.Judgment: when the profile and the site tell the same story, relevance is easier for Google to read.
Description frame (fill in only what is true): "[Business name] provides [services] for homeowners in [city], [city] and [city]. [Years in business, if true.] [License or insurance, only if you hold it.]"

What photos and videos does a contractor profile need?

A contractor profile needs original photos of your crew at work, your team, your vehicles and your finished jobs. Google recommends at least three photos at work and at least three team photos, and says photos should show what the business actually looks like.

Photos at workGoogle: at least 3, showing your team doing the job.
Vehicles and exteriorJudgment: a branded truck helps customers recognize you.
TeamGoogle: at least 3 of management and employees.
Finished jobsJudgment: real before and after shots, with the customer's permission.
Google names photos at work and team photos in its photo tips, and the other two types are our judgment for contractors.
JPG or PNGaccepted photo formats
10 KB to 5 MBallowed file size
720 pxrecommended height and width; 250 px is the minimum
ItemDone whenWhy, and the rule
☐ 15. Photos at workAt least 3 photos show your crew doing real jobs.Google recommends at least three. Photos show only after the business is verified.
☐ 16. Team photosAt least 3 photos show the people customers will meet.Google recommends at least three, in a relaxed style that shows personality.
☐ 17. Vehicles and exteriorPhotos show your branded truck, shop or storefront if you have one.Judgment: it helps customers confirm they have the right company.
☐ 18. Finished jobsPhotos show completed work, with customer permission and no visible house numbers.Judgment. Photos must show what the business actually looks like.
☐ 19. File specsEvery file is JPG or PNG, 10 KB to 5 MB, and at least 250 by 250 px (720 by 720 recommended).Google's photo requirements. Avoid significant alterations or excessive filters or AI.
☐ 20. New photos monthlyYou add a few new photos each month.Judgment. We do not know of a documented ranking effect, so do this for customers first.

How do you handle Google reviews on the checklist?

Build a review link, ask every customer after the job, reply to every review, and never offer anything in return for a review. Google prohibits incentives and fake engagement, and its help pages allow asking customers by link or QR code. For the full rules, replies and reporting, read our Google reviews guide, and for the request system see how to get more Google reviews.

ItemDone whenWhy, and the rule
☐ 21. Review link and QR codeYou have a direct Google review link and a printed QR code.Google allows asking by link or QR code. Build both with our Google review link generator and review QR code generator.
☐ 22. Ask after each jobEvery crew lead asks, or every invoice carries the code.Judgment: ask every customer, not only happy ones. Never offer free or discounted work for reviews.
☐ 23. Reply to every reviewNo review has waited more than a few days for a reply.Replies are public. Judgment: name the job, stay calm, and take disputes offline.
☐ 24. No incentivesNobody on your team offers a discount, gift or other reward for a review.Review incentives are prohibited, and so is paying to remove negative reviews.
☐ 25. Count monthlyYou record new reviews and your average rating each month.Judgment. Use our Google review calculator to set a target.

Do

Ask by link or QR code. Reply by name to the job. Keep a monthly count. Move complaints offline.

Do not

Offer discounts for reviews. Buy or write reviews. Argue in public. Pay to remove negative reviews.

How do you keep calls and messages working?

Make sure the phone number on your profile is answered, because the call button is now the main path from the profile to your team. Google discontinued Business Profile chat and call history on July 31, 2024.

ItemDone whenWhy, and the rule
☐ 26. Answer the listed numberA person or a forwarding service answers the listed number during your hours.Judgment: a missed call from the profile is a lost lead.
☐ 27. Check the call button numberThe call button shows your own number.Google says call button numbers switched from the Google forwarding number to your own number when call history ended.
☐ 28. Plan for after hoursA voicemail or answering service handles calls outside your hours.Judgment. Do not advertise 24/7 service unless you provide it.

We left out Google posts, Q&A and products on purpose. We did not confirm their current status and ranking effect in Google's own help pages, so we do not list them as required items. This is a judgment about what to include, not a statement that they never help.

How do you measure whether the checklist is working?

Record three things every month: your Business Profile performance numbers, your ranking for a short list of target searches, and your review count. Google's performance report is the source for the first one. To see how rankings change by searcher position, read how Google Maps ranking works.

ItemDone whenWhy, and the rule
☐ 29. Monthly performanceYou save views, calls, directions and website clicks each month.Google's report offers interactions, searches, views, directions, calls, website clicks and more, as applicable to your profile. It needs a verified profile.
☐ 30. Target-search rankingsYou record your map and search position for 5 to 10 searches in your cities.Judgment: pick the searches that match your services and cities, and check them the same way each month.
☐ 31. Quarterly auditEvery quarter you recheck items 1 to 14 against what you really do.Judgment. Services, hours and areas change, and the profile should follow.

Read the numbers with Google's caveats in mind. Search data updates at the start of each month and can take up to 5 days to appear. View counts are unique visitors, at most once per person per day, so they are lower than other figures. Performance data includes both organic results and Google Ads, so paid activity can mix into your totals.

How long does the Google Business Profile checklist take?

Most contractors can finish items 1 to 14 in a few hours and the rest over the first month, apart from verification time, which Google sets. These times are our estimate, not a Google figure.

  • Day 1Items 1 to 14: protect, core information, services
  • Week 1Items 15 to 25: photos and review system
  • Month 1Items 26 to 31: calls and a baseline

After the first month, repeat items 20, 23 and 29 every month.

How does the checklist change for each trade?

The checklist is the same for every trade, and only the category, the service names and the proof photos change. The examples below are our suggestions, so confirm category names in Google's own picker, which Google controls. See how we apply it to HVAC and roofing companies.

TradeCategory to look forService names customers useProof photos
HVACHVAC contractorAC repair, furnace installation, heat pump replacementCrew at a condenser or furnace, branded van
RoofingRoofing contractorRoof repair, roof replacement, storm damage repairCrew on a roof with safety gear, finished roof
PlumbingPlumberDrain cleaning, water heater installation, leak repairCrew at a water heater, branded van
ElectricalElectricianPanel upgrade, EV charger installation, lighting installationCrew at a panel, finished install

Our trade pages show how this fits a full plan for HVAC SEO and roofing SEO. Say licensed, insured or certified in your description only if you hold it.

What can this checklist not do?

This checklist cannot guarantee a map pack position, change your distance from the searcher, or buy a better ranking. Google states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

Judgment call: A new profile with few reviews and few links to your website may move slowly after a perfect checklist, because Google ties prominence to both. Google publishes no timeline, so we do not give one.

The checklist covers the profile only. Local rankings also depend on your website pages, links and listings. Those are the parts of our contractor SEO work that sit outside this list.

Should you do the checklist yourself or hire help?

Do it yourself if you have a few hours now and 30 minutes a month, and hire help if you also need service pages, city pages, listings and monthly reporting. The checklist itself is free. Our Google Business Profile optimization service runs it inside every plan and adds the pieces around the profile.

Start with a paid AI visibility audit if you want us to score your profile against competitors first. We credit the fee to your first month if you continue. See pricing and the ranking refund terms, which cover map pack and organic rankings only. We do not promise calls, jobs or ranking dates, and this page is not for anyone who wants a guaranteed position, bought reviews or a profile for an address where they do not work. You can also request an audit.

Google Business Profile checklist FAQ

How long does the Google Business Profile checklist take?

Items 1 to 14 usually take a few hours, and the full list takes about a month with ongoing monthly work. This is our estimate. Verification time is set by Google and can take up to 5 business days for review.

How long until my changes show on Google?

Google says an approved service-area edit can take up to 48 hours to appear. Rankings are different, and Google publishes no timeline for them.

Can I hide my home address?

Yes, if you do not serve customers at that address. Google says a business that does not serve customers at its address should remove it and show only a service area.

Can I pay Google for a better local ranking?

No. Google states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

Which checklist item matters most?

Items 1 to 4 matter first, because a profile that Google suspends cannot rank. After that, Google says categories affect local ranking, so item 5 is the first relevance item. How much each item weighs is our judgment.
