What is SEO for contractors?

SEO for contractors is the work of making a contracting company appear in Google Maps, Google Search and AI answers when a homeowner searches for its trade in its area. On this page, "contractor" means a home service company: HVAC, roofing, plumbing or electrical. General contractors and remodelers share the basics, but project portfolios and commercial bids are outside this page.

A homeowner search leads to three surfaces: the map pack, organic results and AI answers, each drawing on a different part of a contractor's public presence.Homeowner searches trade + cityMap packOrganic resultsAI answersBusiness Profileand reviewsService andcity pagesIndexed pages andaccurate details
Illustration, not data: a homeowner can find a contractor in three places, and each one draws on a different part of the company's public presence.
SurfaceWhat the homeowner seesWhat mainly drives it
Map packA short list of local businesses above the regular resultsYour Google Business Profile, your reviews and your distance from the searcher
Organic resultsRegular web results for the searchYour website pages, such as service and city pages
AI answersAI Overviews and AI Mode responses with linksThe same indexed pages and public details. Google lists no extra requirements

Both the map pack and the organic results can show on the same results page, so a contractor can appear twice for one search.

How does Google rank a local contractor?

Google says local results are mainly based on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence.

RelevanceHow well your profile matches the search.
DistanceHow far you are from the person searching.
ProminenceHow well known you are, including links and reviews.
Google names relevance, distance and prominence as the three factors behind local contractor rankings.

You cannot change distance, because it depends on where the homeowner is. You can improve relevance with complete and accurate profile details. You can improve prominence with reviews and with links from other websites. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. It also says verified, complete and accurate profiles are more likely to appear.

Google states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

Judgment call: Google does not publish how much each factor counts. Any claim about exact weights is a guess, including ours.

What does contractor SEO include?

Contractor SEO covers six areas: the Business Profile, reviews, service pages, city pages, listings and tracking. See our Google reviews guide for the review rules. Our guides on what local SEO is and how Google Maps ranking works explain the local half.

AreaWhat it isWhy it matters
Business ProfileYour listing on Google Maps and Search: name, categories, services, hours and service areaThe map pack starts from the profile
ReviewsCustomer ratings and your repliesGoogle lists review count and ratings as part of prominence
Service pagesOne page for each core service you really performEach page can match a different search
City pagesOne page for each city you really serve, with real local detailMatches "service + city" searches
ListingsYour name, address and phone number on other websitesConflicting details make it harder to confirm which business you are. This is our judgment
TrackingMonthly rankings, plus AI answer checksIt shows whether the work is moving anything

In what order should a contractor do it?

Start with the Business Profile, then reviews, then pages. This order is our judgment, not a Google rule. If Google has suspended the profile, follow our suspended profile guide before anything else, and use our profile checklist to keep it clean.

  1. Correct the Business Profile facts: name, categories, hours and service area.
  2. Set up a routine that asks every customer for a review, for example with a review link generator.
  3. Build one page for each core service you really perform.
  4. Add city pages for cities you really serve.
  5. Fix conflicting listings.
  6. Track rankings every month.

How does contractor SEO differ by trade?

It differs by how customers buy: urgent repairs, planned installs and long research each need a different page and a different kind of proof. See how it works in HVAC local SEO, roofing local SEO and HVAC marketing.

TradeHow customers buyPages that matterProof to show, if you hold it
HVAC SEOUrgent repair and planned replacement, with demand that rises before heat and coldRepair, installation, maintenance plans, city pagesLicense, insurance, warranty terms, real reviews
Roofing SEOUrgent leaks and a high-ticket replacement that homeowners compare across companiesRepair, replacement, storm damage, city pagesLicense, insurance, warranty terms, project photos
PlumbingOften urgentRepair, installation, city pagesLicense, insurance, real reviews
ElectricalA mix of urgent and planned workRepair, installation, city pagesLicense, insurance, real reviews

The HVAC and roofing rows match our trade pages. The plumbing and electrical rows are our judgment from how those trades are usually bought, not a study. Say "licensed", "insured" or "24/7" only if it is true for your company.

How do Google's service-area rules affect a contractor's profile?

A contractor without a storefront is allowed one service-area profile and should hide its address. Our guide to local SEO for service-area businesses covers every rule.

Do

Use your real-world business name, keep one profile for your central location, hide your address if you travel to customers, choose the fewest categories that describe your core business and keep your service area within about two hours of driving from your base.

Do not

Add taglines, services, phone numbers or location details to your business name, use a PO box or a virtual office, create several profiles for one location, or pick categories only as keywords.

Google's guidelines for a service-area contractor ask for one honest profile with a hidden address and a realistic service area.

Google gives the example of a plumber who runs the business from a home address and should clear that address from the profile. It says larger service areas can be appropriate for some businesses. It also says breaking the guidelines can lead to changed information or, in some cases, removal of your business information. An audit should flag every mismatch.

Does AI search change contractor SEO?

Not in the requirements: Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode and no other special optimization is necessary. Our guide explains what AI SEO is.

A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files or special markup, and your structured data should match the visible text. Google also says indexing and serving are never guaranteed.

Other assistants publish no ranking rules. Assuming they work from the same public information as Google is our judgment, not a documented rule. We report AI answer visibility, and the Growth plan includes monthly AI answer tracking. AI answers are excluded from our ranking refund, because they change too often to measure fairly. Read how we use AI-based SEO, or score one page with the free AI page checker.

How long does contractor SEO take?

Contractor SEO takes months, not days, and nobody can promise a ranking date. Profile fixes and reviews can move map rankings sooner. Competitive organic rankings and AI mentions take longer.

Two guides we read give three to six months for first improvements and show no method for that range. Treat it as a rough range, not a rule. The plan below is our template for a six-month cycle.

  • Month 1Audit and profile fixes
  • Months 2 to 3Service pages, city pages and a review routine
  • Months 4 to 5Listings, more pages and monthly reports
  • Month 6Default ranking review
Illustration, not a forecast: our six-month contractor SEO template ends in the default ranking review.

How much does contractor SEO cost?

Our plans start at $1,000 a month for Foundation, $2,000 for Growth and $3,500 for Domination, and the final scope sets the final price.

Starting price per month by plan

Foundation$1,000
Growth$2,000
Domination$3,500
Aimarketify contractor SEO plans start at $1,000, $2,000 and $3,500 a month.
PlanFromBest for
Foundation$1,000 a monthOne location, one trade
Growth$2,000 a monthSeveral cities, with AI answer tracking included
Domination$3,500 a monthMultiple locations and franchises

The price changes with the number of cities, trades and locations you want to win. Competition in your market also matters, which is our judgment. We start with a paid audit, and we credit the fee to your first month if you continue. See the pricing page for plan detail.

How do I choose a contractor SEO provider?

Choose a provider that names targets in writing, lets you own your accounts and reports rankings you can check yourself.

AskA good answerA red flag
What do I get each month?A written list of deliverables"Proprietary methods" and no list
Who owns Analytics, Search Console and the Business Profile? You doThe provider holds them
What do you promise?Measurable rankings, with no promise of calls, jobs or datesA guaranteed position by a date, or guaranteed calls
How do I check results?Reports from accounts you own, plus a rank trackerScreenshots only
What happens if targets are missed?A written remedyNo remedy beyond "SEO takes time"

This table is our judgment, not a standard. Our own answer to the last question is the ranking refund: if agreed map pack and organic targets are missed at the review, you pay only for the audit, content and design delivered, and we refund the rest.

Who is contractor SEO not for, and what can we not promise?

Our service is not for anyone who wants a guaranteed number of calls, a fixed ranking date or results this week.

  • We do not promise calls, jobs or ranking dates.
  • We cannot promise that an AI assistant will name your company.
  • It is not for general contractors, remodelers or commercial builders. We work with HVAC, roofing, plumbing and electrical companies in the United States.
  • It is not for a company that needs leads this week. SEO takes months, and paid ads are a different service that we do not sell. That is our judgment.
  • It is not for a business that has only a PO box or a virtual office, because Google does not allow those for a Business Profile.

We have no published case studies or client reviews yet, so this page makes no claims about past results.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO worth it for a contractor?

It can be, if homeowners search for your trade in your area and you can wait months. SEO builds pages and a profile that you own, while paid ads stop when the budget stops. That comparison is our judgment, not a study.

Can I do contractor SEO myself?

You can do the basics: complete your Business Profile, ask every customer for a review and write honest service pages. Specialist help matters most for city pages at scale, listing cleanup and tracking. This is our judgment.

Do I need a page for every city?

Only for cities you really serve, and each page needs real local detail. Copied pages add little value.

What is the difference between contractor SEO and local SEO?

Local SEO is the part that wins map pack and "near me" searches. Contractor SEO also covers service pages, trust proof and AI answers. In our service they run together.

Do reviews help contractor SEO?

Yes. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Ask after each completed job and reply to each review.

Can you guarantee calls or jobs?

No. We work on rankings and visibility, which we can measure. Calls and jobs depend on your pricing, availability and sales process.
