Google Business Profile
Google Business Profile suspended: causes, appeal and prevention
What a suspension means, how to read the appeals tool, the contractor mistakes that trigger it, and how to appeal once and prepare the evidence.
Definition: A suspended Google Business Profile is a listing that Google has removed from public view because it may have broken the Business Profile guidelines. Google may also disable profiles, and a removed profile cannot be seen by the public or managed by its owner.
Main fact: You can ask Google to reinstate a suspended profile through its appeals tool. Appeals can be submitted only once, and a review can take up to 5 business days. Only Google decides the result.
What we do: We cannot promise reinstatement. We help you find the likely cause, prepare the evidence and keep the profile clean afterward, as part of Google Business Profile optimization.
What does a suspended Google Business Profile mean?
A suspended Google Business Profile means Google decided that the profile did not follow its guidelines and took it out of public view. Google says it may suspend or disable profiles that break the guidelines, and that suspended profiles cannot be viewed by the public or acted on by owners and managers.
Other kinds of restriction exist, and they need different fixes. Google lists five restriction types in its appeals help. Outside the UK and the European Economic Area, which covers US contractors, the appeals tool handles only suspended or disabled profiles.
| Restriction type | What it affects | Where you appeal (outside UK and EEA) |
|---|---|---|
| Profile suspended or disabled | The whole profile | Google's Business Profile appeals tool |
| Profile edits rejected | A change to your name, category, address, phone or website | Contact Google. The appeals tool does not cover it. |
| Media restricted | Photos, videos or posts | Contact Google |
| Other content restricted | Any other rejected content | Contact Google |
| Review removal decision | A review you reported | The review management tool, with a one-time appeal |
| Fake engagement restriction | New reviews blocked, existing reviews unpublished, or a consumer warning | Business Profile review form (Google links it on its restrictions page) |
Google does not define "soft" and "hard" suspensions on the help pages we read, so we do not use those terms as Google facts. If you see them elsewhere, treat them as informal labels.
How do you tell which restriction you have?
Open Google's appeals tool, because it shows the decision date, the reason, a link to the violated policy, whether the decision can be appealed and its status. Start there before you change anything.
| What you see | What it likely means | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Profile not visible to the public, and you cannot manage it | Suspended or disabled profile | Open the appeals tool and read the reason and the linked policy. |
| A decision marked "Eligible for appeal" | Google allows one appeal | Fix the cause, then appeal once. |
| A decision marked "Can't be appealed" | No appeal available for that decision | Contact Google through the help page. Do not create a new profile. |
| Status "Submitted" | Your appeal is in review | Wait. Do not submit another appeal for the same issue. |
| Status "Approved" | Google reinstated the profile | Check name, address, categories and hours. |
| Status "Not Approved" | Appeal denied | Request the additional review and add new evidence. |
| Your whole account is restricted | Managed profiles are suspended | Lift the account restriction on Google's My accounts page first, then appeal the profile. |
Why do contractor profiles get suspended?
Contractor profiles are most often at risk over the business name, the address, duplicate listings and review practices. Google's fix page does not publish a list of causes, so the table below is our judgment about which guideline rules are most likely at issue for a contractor, based on Google's guidelines.
| Likely issue | Google rule it breaks | What to fix |
|---|---|---|
| Keywords or a city added to the name, such as "Best AC Repair Dallas" | The name must reflect the real-world business name. Taglines, hours, phone numbers, URLs and location descriptors are not allowed. | Restore the name on your truck, invoices and website. |
| A virtual office, P.O. box or mailbox as the address | These are not eligible addresses. | Use a real operating address, or hide the address and list service areas. |
| A home or shop address shown when customers do not visit | A business that does not serve customers at its address should remove it. | Hide the address and add service areas. |
| Two profiles for one business | Only one profile per business is allowed. | Find the duplicate and remove or merge it. Do not create a new profile. |
| Rewards for reviews, or fake reviews | Incentives and fake engagement are prohibited. | Stop all rewards. Ask only by link or QR code. |
Review rule breaks can bring a narrower penalty than a suspension, and our Google reviews guide lists what Google allows and prohibits. Google may block new reviews for a set period, unpublish existing reviews for a set period or show a warning to consumers. Google emails the owner before it applies a restriction.
How do you appeal a suspended Google Business Profile?
You appeal in Google's Business Profile appeals tool in six steps, after you have fixed the likely cause. Fixing first is our judgment, because an appeal can be submitted only once.
- Open the toolOpen the Business Profile appeals tool and confirm the Google account linked to the profile.
- Select the profileChoose the profile and the decision you are appealing.
- Add evidenceUpload supporting files and explain in the text box why the profile should be reinstated. Evidence is optional, but it helps.
- Confirm readinessTick the readiness box.
- Submit onceSubmit the appeal. Do not submit a second one for the same issue.
- Wait for the emailGoogle emails the decision, and reviews can take up to 5 business days.
If Google denies the appeal, an additional review is possible only after a denial, and you can add evidence that was not in the first appeal. If the first reply does not resolve the issue, reply to Google's email for further help. Do not create a new profile for the same business at any point.
What evidence should a contractor prepare for an appeal?
Prepare documents that show your business is real and operates at the name and address on the profile. Google names business registration, a business license, tax certificates and utility bills, and the name and address on each document should match the profile.
| What you must show | Evidence | Source |
|---|---|---|
| The business exists | Business registration or tax certificate | Google names both |
| The business is allowed to operate | A business license, if your trade and state require one | Google names the license. Submit one only if you hold it. |
| The name and address are real | A utility bill, such as electricity, phone or internet, with the matching name and address | Google names utility bills |
| The business serves customers | Invoices with customer details removed, and photos of your branded truck and crew at work | Judgment, not a Google requirement |
| The website matches the profile | A screenshot of your site with the same name, phone and service areas | Judgment, not a Google requirement |
What should you do while the appeal is pending?
Keep customers reaching you through other channels and avoid any action that could look like a second attempt. The steps below combine Google's rules with our judgment about running a contractor business.
Do
Answer calls from your website and other listings. Keep your site's phone number and service areas accurate. Record the date you appealed. Watch your email for Google's decision. Prepare extra evidence in case of a denial.
Do not
Create a new profile for the same business. Submit a second appeal for the same issue. Change the name, address or category over and over. Pay anyone who guarantees reinstatement.
If you are also waiting on a postcard code, read the Google Business Profile optimization checklist for the verification rules. Items 1 to 4 on that list are the checks that guard against suspension.
How do you prevent a Google Business Profile suspension?
You prevent most suspensions by keeping the name, address, categories and reviews inside Google's guidelines and by auditing them each quarter. Prevention is cheaper than an appeal, because an appeal can be submitted only once.
- NameMatch your truck, invoices and website
- AddressReal, eligible or hidden
- DuplicatesOne profile per business
Ask for reviews only with a direct link or QR code, using our Google review link generator. Our guide to getting more Google reviews shows the full system. Never offer a reward for a review. Our full 31-item checklist puts these checks first, and our contractor SEO work treats them as the base for ranking. If you travel to customers, read our guide to local SEO for service-area businesses for the address and service-area rules.
What can we do, and what can we not promise?
We can find the likely cause, prepare your evidence and tidy the profile, and we cannot promise reinstatement. Google makes every suspension and appeal decision, and we have no special channel to Google.
Our ranking refund covers map pack and organic ranking targets only. It does not cover the outcome of an appeal. If you want us to review the profile and the rest of your local presence first, start with a paid AI visibility audit. We credit the fee to your first month if you continue, and you can see pricing before you decide.
Who is this guide not for?
This guide is not for owners who want a guaranteed reinstatement, who plan to use documents that are not genuine, or who want a profile for an address where they do not work. Google's rules rule out all three. If you want help with a profile, request an audit.
Google Business Profile suspended FAQ
How long does a Google Business Profile appeal take?
Google says appeal reviews and decisions can take up to 5 business days, and it emails you the decision.
Can I appeal more than once?
No, not for the same decision. Google says appeals can be submitted only once. If Google denies the appeal, an additional review is possible, and you can add evidence that was not in the first appeal.
Should I create a new profile after a suspension?
No. Google says not to create a new Business Profile for the same business. A new profile can create a duplicate and cause further problems.
How do I find out why my profile was suspended?
Open Google's appeals tool. It shows the decision date, the reason and a link to the policy that was violated. If you cannot find a clear reason, compare the profile with Google's guidelines on the name, address and duplicates.
Will reinstatement bring back my profile and its owners?
Google says a reinstatement request restores the profile and its owner and managers. Its help page does not say whether any other data changes, so check your reviews, photos and hours after reinstatement.
