Google Business Profile optimization for contractors

What Google Business Profile optimization covers, the rules that can get a contractor suspended, and what we do inside every plan from $1,000 a month.

Definition: Google Business Profile optimization is the work of completing, correcting and maintaining every field of your Google listing so Google can match it to the searches your customers make.

Main fact: Google says local results rest mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. Optimization improves relevance and part of prominence. It cannot change distance.

What we do: Aimarketify sets up and maintains your profile inside every monthly plan, from $1,000 a month, backed by a ranking refund on agreed map pack and organic targets.

What is Google Business Profile optimization?

Google Business Profile optimization means filling in, correcting and maintaining each field of your Google listing so it matches what customers search for. It is one part of local SEO for contractors, alongside reviews, citations and the pages on your website.

Google lists three factors for local results. Relevance is how well a profile matches the search. Distance is how far the business is from the searcher. Prominence is how well known the business is, which Google ties to links from other websites and the number of reviews. Our guide to what local SEO is explains how the three fit together.

You can improve relevance and part of prominence. You cannot move closer to the customer. Google also states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, so no agency can buy you one.

Three columns showing Google's local ranking factors. Relevance is fed by categories, services, description and hours. Distance is set by your real location and service areas and cannot be changed. Google Business Profile optimization works on relevance and part of prominence, and it cannot change distance.

Which fields does Google Business Profile optimization cover?

Optimization covers eleven fields, and each one maps to a rule in Google's guidelines.

FieldWhat we doGoogle's rule
Business nameUse the name on your truck, invoices and website. The name must reflect the real-world name. Taglines, hours, phone numbers, URLs and location descriptors are not allowed.
Primary categoryPick the most specific category that fits your core trade.Choose the category that best describes the business. You cannot create your own.
Additional categoriesAdd only the few that describe real services.Use "a few" categories, not one per service. Categories affect local ranking.
Service areasList the cities and postal codes you actually serve.Up to 20 areas, named by city or postal code. A radius is not allowed.
AddressHide it if customers do not visit you.A business that does not serve customers at its address should remove it and show only a service area.
HoursEnter the hours you take calls and visit customers.Hours should reflect regular customer-facing operations.
ServicesList each service you sell, in your own words.A profile can show the services you offer.
DescriptionWrite a plain summary of what you do and where. No links of any type, and no focus on promotions, prices or sales.
Photos and videosAdd real photos of your crews, trucks and work.Google says photos and videos can show what you offer.
Reviews and repliesReply to every review, in a calm and specific way.Replies are public. No incentives for reviews, and no offers in replies.
Duplicate profilesFind and remove duplicates of your listing.Only one profile per business is allowed.

How do you set up a Google Business Profile for ranking?

You set up a ranking-ready profile in seven steps, in this order: verify, name, categories, areas, hours, services, description. The order matters because Google can ask you to re-verify if you change the name, address or category later.

Step 1: Claim and verify the profile

Search your business name on Google, claim the listing if one exists, and create one only if it does not. Search first, because Google allows only one profile per business and a duplicate causes display problems. Choose the verification method Google offers, and wait for it without editing core details. Our 31-item Google Business Profile checklist puts these checks in order.

Step 2: Enter the real business name

Use the exact name that appears on your truck, invoices, license and website. Google requires the name to reflect your real-world business name, so extra words can lead to suspension.

Real nameRisky versionWhy it fails
Smith HeatingSmith Heating | Best AC Repair DallasAdds a keyword and a location descriptor to the name.
Smith HeatingSmith Heating Open 24 HoursHours are not part of the name.
Smith HeatingSmith Heating 555-0100Phone numbers are not allowed in the name.

If you legally operate under more than one name, our judgment is to use the one customers see on your vehicles and quotes, and to make your website and other listings match it.

Step 3: Choose the primary and additional categories

Choose the single most specific category for your main trade as the primary category, because Google says categories affect local ranking. Examples of trade categories include HVAC contractor, Roofing contractor, Plumber and Electrician. Confirm the exact names in the category picker, since Google controls the list and you cannot create your own.

Add additional categories only for services you really sell. Google tells businesses to use a few categories, not one for every service. Our judgment: pick your primary by the service that brings most of your revenue, not the service you want more of.

Step 4: Set the address and service areas

If you travel to customers and they do not visit you, hide your street address and list the areas you serve. Google says a business that does not serve customers at its address should remove it and show only a service area. If customers also visit your shop, Google treats you as a hybrid business and your address can show.

  1. List real areasAdd up to 20 cities or postal codes where you want calls.
  2. Stay within reachGoogle's guide is about two hours of driving time from your base.
  3. Skip the radiusGoogle does not allow a radius around the business as a service area.
  4. Wait for approvalAn approved edit can take up to 48 hours to appear.

Our judgment: put your highest-value cities first and do not add cities just to fill the 20 slots. A long list of areas you rarely serve creates a mismatch with your website pages.

Step 5: Enter hours that match real operations

Enter the hours when you answer calls and send crews, because Google says hours should reflect regular customer-facing operations. If you offer emergency service, say so in your description only if it is true. Update holiday hours before the holiday, not after.

Step 6: Add every service you sell

Add each service as its own entry, named the way customers say it. Use "AC repair", "furnace installation" or "roof replacement" instead of internal terms like "mechanical systems". Match each service to a page on your website where one exists, so the profile and the site tell the same story. This is our judgment about relevance, not a documented ranking rule.

Step 7: Write the description

Write the description as two or three plain sentences that say what you do, which trade you work in and which cities you serve. Google does not allow links of any type in the description, and it should not focus on promotions, prices or sales.

Example structure (fill in only what is true): "[Business name] provides [services] for homeowners in [city], [city] and [city]. [Years in business, if true.] [License or insurance, only if you hold it.]" We do not give a character limit here because we did not confirm Google's current one.

How do you handle photos and reviews on a Business Profile?

You handle photos and reviews with real material from real jobs, because Google's guidelines rule out incentives, fake engagement and misleading content. This is also where most prominence work happens, since Google ties prominence to reviews. Our Google reviews guide covers every rule in one place.

Photos and videos to add

Add original photos of your trucks, crew, finished work and equipment. Google says photos and videos can show customers what you offer. Do not use stock photos, since they show nothing about your business. Get permission before you show a customer's home, and check that no house numbers, license plates or people are identifiable. Our judgment: a new batch each month looks more active than one large upload.

How to ask for reviews the allowed way

Ask every customer after a finished job with a direct Google review link or QR code. Our guide to getting more Google reviews gives the full system. Google allows asking for reviews this way and prohibits offering incentives for them. Build the link with our Google review link generator, and print the code with the review QR code generator on invoices, cards or a leave-behind.

  1. Ask at the right momentAsk when the customer has seen the finished work, not before.
  2. Send the linkText or email the direct review link, or show the QR code on site.
  3. Ask everyoneAsk every customer, not only happy ones. Selective asking is a risk; it is our judgment, not a quoted rule.
  4. Reply to each reviewReply within a few days, in a calm and specific way.

How to reply to reviews

Reply to every review in two or three sentences, name the job if the customer did, and never argue in public. Google says replies are public, so write each one for the next customer who reads it.

Positive review reply

Thank the customer by first name, mention the specific job, such as a furnace replacement, and say who did the work if the customer named them. Keep it to two sentences. Offer nothing in return.

Negative review reply

Thank them for the feedback, state the facts in one calm sentence, and move the details offline with a phone number or email. Do not blame the customer, share private job details or offer a refund in public.

If a review breaks Google's policies, you can report it for removal. Never pay for removal of negative reviews, which Google prohibits. Use our Google review calculator to see how many reviews you need to reach a target rating.

Which Business Profile mistakes do we fix first?

We fix the mistakes that risk suspension first, then the ones that weaken relevance. The table lists the most common problems in the order we check them. The order is our judgment, based on what costs the most if left in place.

MistakeWhy it mattersFix
Keywords or taglines in the nameGoogle may suspend a profile with extra information in the name.Restore the real-world name.
Shop address shown for a home-based businessOnly an eligible address is allowed, and customers may arrive at a place you do not serve.Hide the address and list service areas.
Radius used as a service areaGoogle does not allow it.Replace it with named cities or postal codes.
Duplicate profilesOnly one profile per business is allowed, and duplicates cause display problems.Find the duplicates and remove or merge them.
Wrong primary categoryGoogle says categories affect local ranking.Choose the most specific category for your main trade.
Links or prices in the descriptionGoogle does not allow links, and promotions and prices should not be the focus.Rewrite it as a plain summary.
Unanswered reviewsReplies are public and show customers how you handle problems.Reply to every review.
Old photos and wrong hoursCustomers call at times you do not answer.Update hours and add new photos.

What should you check on a Business Profile every month?

Check the profile once a month for new reviews, wrong information, new duplicates and unapproved edits. The schedule below is our working routine, not a Google requirement.

WhenCheck
Every weekReply to new reviews and check that calls from the profile reach a person.
Every monthAdd new photos, check hours, confirm service areas and look for new duplicate listings.
Every quarterCompare categories and services with what you actually sell, and update the description if your services changed.
After any changeRe-check name, address and category if you moved, rebranded or added a trade.

You can do all of this yourself. Our plans take it off your plate and add the pieces that sit outside the profile, which are the service pages, city pages, citations and monthly ranking report.

How does our Google Business Profile optimization work?

Our work runs in four steps, and the first step is a paid AI visibility audit that we credit to your first month if you continue.

  1. AuditWe score your profile, rankings, reviews, website and AI visibility against the top competitors near you.
  2. Fix and verifyWe correct the eleven fields above. Your profile is set up under your ownership in week one.
  3. Support the profileWe build service and city pages that match the services and areas on the profile, and a review system for asking customers.
  4. ReportYou get a monthly ranking report for the map and search results that matter. You can verify every ranking yourself.

How should a contractor set up a service-area profile?

A contractor who travels to customers should run one profile, the only profile a service-area business gets, with named service areas and no public street address. Google calls this a service-area business, and a business that also serves customers at its own address is a hybrid.

20service areas at most, by city or postal code
about 2 hoursof driving time from your base, as a guide
48 hoursfor an approved service-area edit to appear

Google does not allow a radius around your business as a service area, so existing radius areas must be replaced with named cities or postal codes. A virtual office or mailbox is not an eligible address. Plan your 20 areas around the cities where you want calls, and keep the list honest. Our trade pages show how this works for HVAC SEO and roofing SEO. Read our guide to local SEO for service-area businesses for the full rules, and see HVAC local SEO and roofing local SEO.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

Verification takes up to five business days for review, and a postcard code usually arrives within 14 days. You must verify before you can edit business information or reply to customers.

  • Up to 5 business daysGoogle review time for a verification request
  • Most within 14 daysPostcard code arrival, where postcards are offered
  • 30 daysA postcard code expires after this

Verification can be instant through Search Console or bulk verification. Google decides which methods you get, and you cannot change them. While you wait for a postcard, do not edit the name, address or category, and do not request a second code. Both actions can invalidate the first one.

What can get a contractor's Google Business Profile suspended?

Google may suspend a profile that breaks its guidelines, and the rules below are the ones that apply most to service businesses (our judgment of relevance, not a ranking of frequency).

RuleWhat it means for a contractor
Real-world business nameDo not add "Best AC Repair Dallas" to a business called "Smith Heating". Extra information can lead to suspension.
Eligible addressNo virtual offices, P.O. boxes or remote mailboxes. Show a service area if you work at customers' homes.
One profile per businessDuplicates cause problems with how your information displays.
No links or promotions in the descriptionDescribe the work. Leave out URLs, coupons and prices.
No review incentivesFree or discounted work in exchange for reviews is prohibited, and so is paying to remove negative ones.

After a fake engagement violation, Google may block new reviews for a set period, unpublish existing reviews or show a warning to consumers. Google lets owners appeal and says it re-reviews the profile, but the outcome is Google's to decide. For the appeal steps and the evidence to prepare, read our guide to a suspended Google Business Profile.

What do we do, and what do we never do?

We follow Google's guidelines on every change, which rules out several tactics that other services use.

We do

Match the profile to your real name, trade and cities. Reply to reviews. Give you a review link and QR code for asking customers. Report rankings you can check yourself.

We never do

Stuff keywords into your name. Use a fake address or virtual office. Write or buy reviews. Offer discounts for reviews. Promise a ranking date.

How much does Google Business Profile optimization cost?

Business Profile care is included in every Aimarketify plan, and plans start at $1,000 a month. The final scope sets the final price, and the number of cities and trades is the main driver.

Starting price per month by plan

Foundation$1,000
Growth$2,000
Domination$3,500
PlanBest forProfile-related work included
Foundation, from $1,000One location, one tradeBusiness Profile care, service and city pages, review system and citations, monthly ranking report
Growth, from $2,000Several cities, AI search includedEverything in Foundation, more cities and service pages, AI answer tracking each month, priority reporting calls
Domination, from $3,500Multi-location and franchisesEverything in Growth, multiple locations and trades, location-level reporting, custom scope in writing

See the full pricing page for how the audit credit works. Of the three agency service pages we read for this page, one published a price: Robben Media lists a starting price of $1,250 a month. The other two published none (checked October 20, 2026).

Will optimizing my profile put my company in the map pack?

No one can promise a map pack position, including us, because Google decides local rankings and does not sell them. What we promise is about the money. We write down the searches and positions we aim for before you pay a retainer, and we review them with you at 6 months. If we missed, you pay only for the audit, content and design delivered, and we refund the rest.

The ranking refund covers map pack and organic rankings only. We report AI answer visibility but exclude it from the refund.

Judgment call: A new profile with few reviews and few links to your website may take longer to move than an established one, because Google ties prominence to both. Google publishes no timeline, so we do not give one.

Who is this service not for?

This service is not for owners who want a guaranteed ranking date, bought reviews, or a profile for an address where they do not work. Google's rules rule out all three, and ignoring them can get your profile suspended.

We also do not promise calls or jobs. We cannot see your pricing, your crews or your close rate, and those decide what a ranking is worth. If you are still comparing options, read how the work fits into SEO for contractors, or request an audit to see where your own profile stands first.

Google Business Profile optimization FAQ

How much does Google Business Profile optimization cost?

Profile care is included in every plan, and plans start at $1,000 a month. The final scope sets the final price, and the audit fee is credited to your first month if you continue.

How long do profile changes take to show?

Google says an approved service-area edit can take up to 48 hours to appear. Rankings are different. We do not promise a date for them.

Do I have to give you my Google login?

No. Your Business Profile stays under your ownership, and we set it up that way in week one.

Can you fix a suspended profile?

We can check the profile against Google's guidelines and help you prepare an appeal. Google lets owners appeal restrictions and re-reviews the profile, but Google makes the decision, so we cannot promise a result.

Can I optimize my Google Business Profile myself?

Yes. The seven setup steps above cost nothing but time. What a plan adds is the service and city pages, citations, review system and monthly ranking report around the profile. This is our judgment, not a Google rule.

Can you write reviews for my profile?

No. Google prohibits incentives for reviews and fake engagement. You can ask real customers with a Google link or QR code, and you can use our free tools to build the link.
