What is AI SEO? A guide for home service contractors
AI SEO means two different things. Here is what each one is, what Google says about AI answers, and what a contractor should do.
Definition: AI SEO is a term with two meanings: using AI tools to do SEO work faster, and optimizing a business so AI answers such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini can find, understand and name it.
Main fact: Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimization or schema is needed. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet.
What we do: We use both meanings, and a person reviews every page. See our AI-based SEO service. We cannot promise that any AI tool will name your company.
What is AI SEO?
AI SEO is a label for two different jobs, and most guides cover only one of them. The first is using AI to help with SEO work. The second is making a business easy for AI answers to find and name.
| Meaning | What it is | Example | Who it matters to |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI for SEO | Using AI tools to research, draft, audit and check SEO work | Drafting a service page, then having a person verify and edit it | The person or agency doing the work |
| SEO for AI answers | Making sure AI answers can find, understand and name your business | A homeowner asks an AI tool for a reliable HVAC company and your name appears | The business owner |
The two are separate. An agency can use AI heavily and still do nothing to get a client named in AI answers, and the reverse is also true. When someone sells "AI SEO", ask which meaning they are selling.
How do AI answers choose which pages to show?
Google says its AI features may run several related searches across subtopics and data sources, then show supporting links. Google calls this "query fan-out", and it says the models can surface a wider and more diverse set of helpful links.
Google also says AI Overviews are shown only when its systems decide they add to classic Search, and that indexing and serving are not guaranteed. Other AI tools, such as ChatGPT, publish less about how they choose sources, so what follows for those tools is observation and judgment.
Is AI SEO different from regular SEO?
For Google's AI features, Google says no special optimization is needed beyond standard SEO practices. Google says there are no new requirements, no new machine-readable files and no special schema.org markup for these features.
Google does advise making sure important content is available as text and that structured data matches the visible text. That means a page that works for regular search already meets the base conditions for AI features. It does not mean it will be shown. Our judgment is that the extra work is in consistency: the same business name, services and cities everywhere a tool might read them, starting with your Business Profile. Our Business Profile optimization service covers that setup.
What does AI SEO look like for a home service contractor?
For a contractor, AI SEO means the same facts about your company are accurate, consistent and written down in plain text across your Business Profile and website. AI answers often handle local questions, so the basics of local SEO come first.
- Fix the factsMatch your name, services, cities and hours everywhere, starting with your Business Profile.
- Write answer-first pagesPut a service or city question and a direct answer in text, with real local detail.
- Earn real reviewsAsk every customer after the job and reply to each review.
Our guide to what local SEO is covers the profile, reviews and pages in more detail. These steps also help regular rankings, which is why we start there. How much each one affects AI answers is unproven and likely varies by tool.
Are GEO, AEO and AI SEO the same thing?
The terms overlap and none has an official definition from Google. Generative engine optimization (GEO) usually means being used in generated answers, and answer engine optimization (AEO) usually means winning answer-style results, and both sit under what most people call AI SEO.
Some guides present GEO and AEO as settled, separate disciplines. We found no Google statement that treats them as separate, so we use AI SEO as the umbrella term. That is our choice, and you may see the terms used differently elsewhere.
How do you measure AI SEO?
You measure it by asking the same real questions in each AI tool on a schedule and recording whether your business is named. Google also says traffic from AI features is included in the overall Search Console traffic, under the Web search type.
| Method | What it shows | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console, Web search type | Clicks and impressions from Google Search, which include AI features | Google does not split AI features out of the total in the sources we read |
| A fixed list of questions asked monthly | Whether your company is named, and which sources are cited | Answers vary between runs, so look at the pattern over time |
| Our free AI page checker | Whether a single page has clear, answer-ready content | A page check, not a ranking prediction |
Try the AI page checker on one service page to see what it finds.
Which AI SEO claims should you not trust?
Treat any AI SEO statistic with no source, date or method as an opinion. In the guides we read, several give click-rate drops, local mention rates and click gains with none of those details.
| Claim | Problem | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A fixed percentage drop in clicks when an AI answer appears | No source, date or method | Check your own Search Console data |
| A percentage of local businesses named in AI answers | No source or method, and answers vary by tool and question | Run your own question list |
| Being cited causes more clicks | A correlation presented as a cause | Ask for the study design |
| You need a special file or markup for AI | Google says no new machine-readable files or special schema are needed for its AI features | Fix the basics first |
| An agency guarantees you will be named | No one controls AI answers | Walk away |
How does Aimarketify do AI SEO?
We use AI to speed up research and drafting, a person reviews every page, and we check monthly whether AI tools name your company. Plans start at $1,000, $2,000 and $3,500 a month, and the final scope sets the final price.
You start with a paid AI visibility audit, credited to your first month if you continue. We agree ranking targets in writing, and the ranking refund covers map pack and organic positions only. AI answer visibility is reported but excluded, because answers change too often to measure fairly.
What can we not promise?
We cannot promise that an AI tool will name your company, a ranking, calls, jobs or a date. We can promise accurate facts, real pages and honest monthly reporting. Google decides what it shows, and other tools make their own choices.
Who is AI SEO not for?
AI SEO is not for companies that want a guarantee of being named, want to buy reviews, or want a shortcut around the basics. It is a poor fit if your Business Profile, reviews and service pages are not in place yet, because those come first.
Who wrote this guide?
This guide was written by R. Rahman, who holds an MBA in marketing, has about seven years in SEO and writes SEO and sales pages. A person reviewed every claim, and our AI-based workflow sped up the research and drafting. Read more on the about page.
