Local SEO for service-area businesses: rules and setup

Google allows one service-area profile for a business that travels to customers. Here are its rules, what the service area does and does not do, and how to cover more cities.

Definition: Local SEO for a service-area business is the work of ranking a company that travels to customers, such as an HVAC, roofing, plumbing or electrical company, using one Business Profile with a service area and no public address.

Main fact: Google allows one service-area profile for a business without a storefront, says to hide its address, and allows up to 20 service areas. Cities you serve beyond that profile need pages on your website.

What we do: We run this setup inside every plan, from $1,000 a month, as part of our local SEO services. We cannot promise rankings, calls or jobs.

What is a service-area business?

A service-area business is a company that serves customers at their location instead of at its own premises. Google says such businesses should have one profile for the central office or location, with a designated service area.

Plumbers, electricians, HVAC and roofing companies are the usual examples, because the work happens at the customer's home. Google notes a hybrid case: a business that serves customers at its premises and also travels, such as an auto repair shop with roadside service, can show its address and set a service area. Our guide to what local SEO is covers where this fits in the wider picture.

What are Google's rules for a service-area Business Profile?

Google's rules say to hide your address, keep one profile, set a reachable area and never use a mailbox or an unstaffed virtual office as your location. The table lists each rule with what it means for a contractor.

RuleWhat Google saysWhat it means for a contractor
AddressIf you are a service-area business, hide your business address from customers.A home-based plumber removes the home address from the profile.
Number of profilesA business with no storefront that travels to customers is allowed one service-area profile. One profile for the base you work from, not one per city.
Service area sizeA service area should not extend farther than about 2 hours of driving time from where you are based, though larger areas may suit some businesses.List only places you can reach.
Number of areasYou can set up to 20 service areas by city, postal code or other area.Pick the 20 that matter most. Cover the rest with pages.
Virtual officeA virtual office is not allowed unless it is staffed during business hours.Do not rent a mailing address to appear somewhere else.
P.O. boxesP.O. boxes or mailboxes at remote locations are not acceptable.Do not use one as your profile location.
More than one locationOne profile per location is allowed only with separate service areas and separate staff at each.A second office needs its own crew and area.

Our guide to how Google Maps ranking works explains why these rules matter for visibility, and our suspended profile guide covers what to do if a rule is broken.

Does setting a service area help you rank?

Google says a service area helps people find your Business Profile and shows customers where you work, and it does not say the setting changes ranking. Experts also rate it low, so do not expect a long list of cities to carry your rankings.

In the Whitespark 2026 survey, experts ranked "setting service areas in GBP" 152nd of the map pack and Maps factors, with a score of 54, against 225 for distance. Those scores are expert opinion and not Google confirmation. Google names relevance, distance and prominence as the factors in local ranking, and distance is measured from the searcher, so a profile tends to do best near its base.

Judgment call: Treat the service area as a customer-facing label and a safety setting, not a ranking lever. Our own plan puts the effort into the profile's accuracy, reviews and city pages instead.

How do you set up a service-area profile?

You set it up in three steps: hide the address, choose your service areas, and make sure the category and services match the work. Google gives these steps for the area itself: go to your Business Profile, choose Edit profile, then Location, and edit Service area.

  1. Hide the addressKeep your pin at the real base, and hide the address if customers do not visit you there.
  2. Set the service areaChoose a suggested area or enter your own, up to 20 cities, postal codes or other areas, and save.
  3. Match category and servicesPick the most specific category and list only the work you perform.

Google says you may be asked to verify your business again if you change a category, so we change categories carefully.

How do you rank in cities outside your profile's pull?

You build one page per city you really serve on your own website. The profile covers the base, and a city page says where else you work and why you are a fit there. This is our method, and Google does not require it.

A service-area business uses one profile for its base and one website page for each city it really serves.

A city page needs facts a copied page would lack: the neighborhoods you serve, the jobs you do there and any rules you have confirmed. See how we do this for HVAC and roofing companies.

Which service-area mistakes lead to suspension?

The main mistakes are showing a home address, using a virtual office or mailbox, and listing cities you do not serve. Google says a virtual office is ineligible unless it is staffed during business hours.

Do

Hide a home address. Keep the pin at your real base. Set an area you can reach in about two hours.

Do not

Use a P.O. box, a rented mailbox or an unstaffed virtual office. List cities you do not serve. Add a profile for a place with no staff.

Whitespark experts score a service area wider than two hours as a suspension risk, which is opinion and not a Google statement. If a profile is restricted, follow our suspended Google Business Profile guide.

Which service-area claims should you not trust?

Treat any rule with no named Google source as an opinion. Two claims we found in top-ranking guides have no support in Google's help pages.

How do you measure a service-area business?

Measure rankings from points across your service area, because a result changes with the searcher's position. One number from the office misses the cities where the work happens.

We report map and organic positions by point, plus reviews and profile activity from Google's performance data. Google does not report your ranking position in that data. The method is in how Google Maps ranking works.

How does Aimarketify handle service-area local SEO?

We set the profile, the service area and the city pages together, and we report rankings by point. Plans start at $1,000, $2,000 and $3,500 a month, and the final scope sets the final price.

You start with a paid AI visibility audit, credited to your first month if you continue. We agree targets in writing, and if we miss them at six months, you pay only for what was delivered; see the ranking refund. See pricing for the plans. We cannot promise calls, jobs, a ranking position or a date.
