Google reviews for business: a contractor's guide
How Google reviews work for a contractor, what Google allows and prohibits when you ask, how to reply, and how to report a review that breaks policy.
Definition: Google reviews for a business are ratings and written comments that signed-in customers post about it. They show next to your Business Profile in Google Maps and Search.
Main fact: Google lets you ask customers for reviews with a link or QR code, and prohibits incentives, selective asking and fake reviews. You cannot delete a review you dislike. You can report one that breaks Google's policies.
What we do: We build the review system inside every plan, from $1,000 a month, as part of our local SEO services. We do not promise a rating, a review count or a ranking.
What are Google reviews for a business?
Google reviews are star ratings and written comments that customers leave on a business's Google listing. They appear next to the Business Profile in Maps and Search, and customers must be signed in to a Google Account to post one.
Google says reviews can help a business stand out and give customers useful information. It also says a mix of positive and negative feedback often feels more trustworthy. For service businesses, customers may choose the specific service they received, and that choice appears with a written review. Review features vary by country and business category, and Google says availability may change.
Reviews are one part of local visibility, and local SEO covers the rest. Google lists prominence as a local ranking factor and ties it to things like review count and links to your website. Google publishes no weight and no threshold, so no review count guarantees a position. Our guide on whether Google reviews help SEO separates what Google confirms from expert opinion. Our Google Business Profile optimization service treats reviews as one of eleven profile fields.
What does Google allow and prohibit for business reviews?
Google allows you to ask for genuine reviews and prohibits anything that influences the rating or the content. The rules below come from Google's Fake Engagement policy and review help pages.
| Practice | Allowed? | Google's rule |
|---|---|---|
| Asking customers with a Google link or QR code | Yes | Google says you can ask customers to visit a link or scan a QR code. |
| Reminding customers to leave a review | Yes | Merchants may encourage genuine reviews without offering incentives or trying to influence the rating or content. |
| Free or discounted work in exchange for a review | No | Incentives such as payment, discounts, free goods or services are prohibited. |
| Asking only customers you expect to be happy | No | Merchants may not selectively solicit positive reviews or discourage negative ones. |
| Pressuring customers to review while on the premises | No | Merchants should not require or pressure users to leave reviews on the premises. |
| Setting a staff quota or script for reviews | No | Merchants may not ask staff to solicit a set number of reviews or reviews with specific content. |
| Paying for reviews, or posting from several accounts | No | Paid reviews and multiple accounts by one person are not allowed. |
| Reviews from employees or people with a conflict of interest | No | Reviews based on a conflict of interest are removed. |
| Offering a reward to change or remove a negative review | No | Reviews posted because of such an incentive are removed. |
Google may also restrict a profile for fake engagement. It can block new reviews for a set period, unpublish existing reviews or show a consumer warning. Read our guide to a suspended Google Business Profile for how appeals work.
What are the steps to get Google reviews the allowed way?
You get reviews by asking every customer after the job with a direct Google review link or QR code, and by never offering anything in return. For the full system, read our guide to getting more Google reviews. Google lists both the link and the QR code as allowed ways to ask.
- Build the linkCreate a direct review link for your profile with our Google review link generator.
- Print the codeMake a QR code with our review QR code generator for invoices, cards or a leave-behind.
- Ask everyoneAsk every finished job, not only the ones that went well.
- Ask at the right timeAsk after the customer has seen the finished work. This timing is our judgment.
- Set a targetUse the Google review calculator to see how many reviews reach a target rating.
How do you reply to Google reviews?
You reply from your verified Business Profile by opening Read reviews and selecting the reply icon. Google checks replies against its content policies, usually within about 10 minutes and sometimes up to 30 days, and approved replies show publicly under the review.
The reviewer is notified when you reply, and customers can still change their review afterward. Your personal name is not shown on the reply. Google's own tips are to keep replies professional, polite and short, to personalize them with the reviewer's name, to reply promptly and not to use replies to offer deals.
Positive review
Thank the customer by name, mention the job in a few words, and sign with your name or initials. Keep it short and do not offer a deal.
Negative review
Thank them for the feedback, state the facts calmly, admit a real mistake, and move the details to a phone call or email. Do not share private information or attack the customer.
How do you report or remove a bad Google review?
You cannot delete a review because you disagree with it, but you can report a review that breaks Google's policies. Google says only policy-violating reviews are eligible for removal, and it does not step into disputes between a business and a customer.
- Open your reviewsGo to your Business Profile and select Read reviews.
- ReportSelect Report next to the review and choose a reason, such as spam or profanity.
- WaitGoogle says evaluation typically takes several days. Watch the status in the tool.
- Appeal onceIf Google finds no violation, you get a one-time appeal, and you can include up to 10 reviews.
Reviews that violate policy are removed from Maps and Search. Google also says its automated spam detection can occasionally remove legitimate reviews, and that you should contact support if that happens. Never pay anyone to remove a negative review, which Google prohibits.
Do Google reviews help local SEO?
Reviews help local visibility, but Google gives no weight, no threshold and no guaranteed result. Google ties prominence to factors such as review count, and prominence is one of its three local ranking factors, along with relevance and distance.
Our judgment is that reviews matter most when they are recent, honest and specific to the service and city. We do not know of a documented rule that says a given number of reviews moves a business into the map pack. Anyone who quotes one is guessing. See contractor SEO for how reviews fit with the website pages and listings that also drive rankings.
What review routine should a contractor follow each month?
A contractor should reply to new reviews within a few days, ask after every job and record the review count each month. The routine below is our working schedule, not a Google requirement.
| When | Task | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Every job | Ask with the link or QR code | Every invoice or finish-up message carries it |
| Every week | Reply to new reviews | No review waits more than a few days |
| Every month | Record review count and average rating | The numbers are saved in one place |
| Every quarter | Check the profile for fake or policy-breaking reviews | Reports are filed for any real violations |
The full list of profile checks sits in our Google Business Profile optimization checklist, where items 21 to 25 cover reviews.

What do we do about reviews, and what can we not promise?
We build and run the review system inside every plan, and we cannot promise a star rating, a review count or a ranking. The Foundation plan includes a review system, and the review work is part of Business Profile care.
The ranking refund covers agreed map pack and organic ranking targets only. Start with a paid AI visibility audit if you want us to score your reviews against your nearest competitors. We credit the fee to your first month if you continue. See pricing for the three plans.
Who is this guide not for?
This guide is not for owners who want bought reviews, a review script for the crew, or a promise of a rating. Google's rules rule out each of them. If you want us to look at your reviews and profile, request an audit.
Google reviews for business FAQ

No. Google says merchants may not selectively solicit positive reviews. Ask every customer in the same way.
How many reviews do I need to rank?
Google publishes no number. Use our Google review calculator to set a rating target, and treat any fixed count as a guess.
