HVAC marketing
HVAC marketing: SEO, ads or leads?
Compare the six channels HVAC companies use, how each charges and who owns the result. We sell local SEO only, and we say when ads fit better.
Definition: HVAC marketing is every way a heating and cooling company gets found and chosen by homeowners: search, ads, lead marketplaces, referrals, maintenance plans and direct contact.
Our position: We sell one channel, local SEO. We do not run ads. This page compares the channels fairly so you can decide where each dollar should go.
What is HVAC marketing?
HVAC marketing is the set of channels that bring a homeowner to your company at the moment they need repair, installation or maintenance. Some channels catch people who are already searching. Others build trust before the need appears.
The channels differ in three ways: how fast they start, how you pay, and who owns the result when you stop. Those three differences decide most of the choice. Our HVAC SEO page covers the search channel in depth, and HVAC local SEO covers the map half of it.
Which HVAC marketing channels exist?
Six channels cover almost every HVAC company: organic search and the map pack, Google Local Services Ads, paid search ads, lead marketplaces, referrals and past-customer marketing, and offline marketing. The table compares them on the three differences above.
| Channel | How you pay | Speed | Who owns it if you stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organic search and map pack (SEO) | Monthly fee for work, no payment per click or lead | Months | You: pages, reviews and profile stay |
| Google Local Services Ads | Per lead, from a budget you set | Fast once verified | Google: ads stop when spending stops |
| Paid search ads (Google Ads) | Usually per click | Fast | The ad account, not rankings |
| Lead marketplaces | Usually per lead or per membership | Fast | The platform owns the customer relationship |
| Referrals and past customers | Staff time, small incentives where allowed | Steady, builds slowly | You: your customer list |
| Offline: mail, vehicle wraps, yard signs | Print and placement cost | Varies | You, but hard to measure |
The cost models and ownership above are how these channels work in general. Exact prices vary by city, season and platform, so we give none that we could not verify from a primary source.
How do Google Local Services Ads work for HVAC?
Local Services Ads are pay-per-lead listings for verified local service providers, and Google lists HVAC as an eligible home service. Google says you pay only when potential customers get in touch, and the ads appear at the top of the page.
- VerifyBusinesses must pass Google's screening and verification, which includes business registration and identity checks.
- Set a budgetYou set an average weekly budget. Google says you can exceed it in a week but never spend more than your monthly maximum.
- Pay per valid leadPhone calls you answer or return, qualifying missed calls, messages and voicemails count as leads.
Google states that lead prices vary by location, job type, lead type and bidding mode. It also says charged leads are reassessed and may be credited automatically if judged low quality, and that you can report poor leads through its feedback survey. Repeat contact from the same number or email within 15 days of a charged lead is not charged again.
The trade-off is ownership. When the budget stops, the ads stop, and the leads belong to a placement you rent. That is a fair price for speed. It is a poor foundation if it is your only channel.
Is HVAC SEO better than Local Services Ads?
Neither is better in general. Local Services Ads are faster, and local SEO builds assets you own. Which one fits depends on how soon you need calls and how long you plan to stay in your market.
Local Services Ads fit when
You need calls soon, you have open technician capacity, and you can answer the phone every time. You accept paying per lead for as long as you want them.
Local SEO fits when
You plan to stay in your market for years, want pages and reviews you own, and can wait months for rankings to build. It does not stop working the day you stop paying us.
Many companies use both. That is our judgment, not a rule. We only sell the second, so weigh our view with that in mind. Read what local SEO is and how Google Maps ranking works to see what you would be buying.
How do lead marketplaces compare?
Lead marketplaces connect homeowners with contractors and charge the contractor, usually per lead or by membership. They can produce contacts quickly. The platform keeps the relationship with the homeowner, and a lead may also go to other companies.
Terms differ by platform and change often, so read the current lead terms on the platform's own page before you sign anything. Track every lead to a booked job, because the price per lead matters less than the price per booked job.
What about referrals and past customers?
Referrals and past customers are the cheapest channel and the only one you fully own. A maintenance plan list, a simple thank-you after each job and a request for a review give you repeat work and new local reviews from the same effort.
Reviews tie this channel to search. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can improve local ranking. Our guide to getting more Google reviews shows the routine, and it works whichever paid channel you use.
Which channel fits which HVAC company?
The right mix depends on your capacity, your market and your cash. The table gives our judgment for five common situations. It is not a documented rule.
| Your situation | Our judgment | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New company, little cash, open schedule | Start with Local Services Ads and referrals | You need contacts soon and have no rankings yet |
| Busy season, trucks already full | Do not add paid lead volume | More leads you cannot serve cost money and reviews |
| Established, plans to stay for years | Add local SEO and keep ads as a supplement | Pages and reviews compound; ads only rent attention |
| Several cities or trades | Local SEO with city and service pages | One page per place and job is how you cover them |
| Depends on one marketplace for most jobs | Build an owned channel first | Losing the platform would lose the pipeline |
Which HVAC marketing claims should you not trust?
Treat any HVAC marketing number with no named source as an opinion. When we read the top-ranking guides for this topic, several give budgets, cost per lead or return figures with no source or method.
| Claim type found in guides | Problem | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A monthly ad budget range for HVAC | No source or method given | Ask for the city, season and campaign it came from |
| A cost-per-lead figure | Described as what "some" companies report | Calculate your own from booked jobs |
| A return such as "tenfold" for paid ads | No data shown | Ignore it until you can measure your own |
| "Agency hiring is the cheapest option" | Written by an agency | Compare in-house, agency and DIY on your own numbers |
Some guides do cite their market statistics, and that is good practice. Market size tells you the industry is large. It does not tell you what a lead costs in your city.
How do you compare HVAC marketing channels fairly?
Compare channels by cost per booked job and by what you own afterward. Cost per lead hides the jobs that never happened.
- Track every contactUse one call-tracking or lead log, and tag each contact by channel.
- Count booked jobsDivide each channel's spend by its booked jobs, not by its leads.
- Check what remainsAsk what you keep if you stop paying that channel.
How does our service fit into HVAC marketing?
We run the search channel for HVAC companies: Business Profile care, service and city pages, a review routine and monthly ranking reports. See the full scope on HVAC local SEO and the broader local SEO services page.
Our plans start at $1,000, $2,000 and $3,500 a month, and the final scope sets the final price. You start with a paid AI visibility audit, and we credit the fee to your first month if you continue. See pricing for the plans.
We agree target searches and positions in writing before you pay a retainer and check them at six months by default. If we miss, you pay only for the audit, content and design delivered, and we refund the rest. The refund covers map pack and organic rankings only. Read the ranking refund policy.
What can we not promise?
We cannot promise calls, jobs, revenue, a ranking position or a date. We work on rankings and visibility, which we can measure. Calls depend on your pricing, availability and sales process, and Google decides who ranks.
Who is this service not for?
It is not for companies that need leads this week, want pay-per-lead ads managed, or want guaranteed calls. For those goals, Local Services Ads or a marketplace fit better. If you want an honest read of where you stand, book an audit. Other trades follow the same logic; see contractor SEO.
