Google Maps ranking

How Google Maps ranking works for contractors

What decides the order in Google Maps and the map pack, which factors experts rank highest, and why your rank changes from one spot to the next.

Definition: Google Maps ranking is the order in which Google lists businesses in Google Maps and the map pack for a search. Google decides it mainly on relevance, distance and prominence.

Main fact: Distance is part of the ranking, so the same business ranks differently depending on where the searcher stands. Google states that no one can request or pay for a better local ranking.

What we do: We improve the parts of Maps ranking a contractor controls, from $1,000 a month, through our local SEO services. We do not promise calls, jobs or ranking dates.

What is Google Maps ranking?

Google Maps ranking is the position a business's Google Business Profile takes in the list Google shows for a local search. The same profile feeds Google Maps and the map pack in Google Search.

A search such as "plumber near me" returns a set of listings, and the order is the ranking. A higher spot gets seen first. Our guide to what local SEO is explains where Maps ranking sits next to regular results and AI answers.

How does Google decide the order?

Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well a profile matches the search, distance is how far the business is from the searcher, and prominence is how well known the business is.

Google says prominence draws on information such as links and reviews. It publishes no weights, no thresholds and no formula, so every exact percentage you read for these factors is an estimate. What follows separates what Google confirms from what experts rank.

Which Maps ranking factors do local SEO experts rank highest?

In the Whitespark 2026 survey, experts ranked the primary Business Profile category first, searcher distance second and keywords in the business title third. Whitespark asked 47 local search experts to score the factors for the map pack and Maps.

Why does your Google Maps ranking change from place to place?

Your ranking changes by location because distance from the searcher is part of the ranking. A searcher near you sees you higher than a searcher across town, and Google uses what it knows about a searcher's location when none is shared.

The same three businesses rank in a different order for searchers at two spots on a mapABC12Spot 1Spot 2Searcher at spot 1 sees1. Business A2. Business B3. Business CSearcher at spot 2 sees1. Business C2. Business B3. Business A
The same three businesses rank in a different order when the searcher stands in a different spot, which is why distance is part of Maps ranking. Illustration, not data.

A single "I rank number 3" is therefore an incomplete answer. Your rank depends on the spot you check from. Rank checks that sample many points across your service area show the real pattern, and our judgment is that they are the most honest way to read a Maps ranking.

The factors you can change still matter. Within the same spot, a business with the right category, correct hours and strong reviews can outrank a closer rival. That is why we work on those, and not on distance.

Does the service area setting help a contractor rank?

Adding cities to your service area does little for ranking, according to experts, and an oversized area is a risk. Experts ranked "setting service areas in GBP" 152nd of the map pack and Maps factors, with a score of 54.

2 hoursof driving, the service-area guideline

Google says a service area should not extend much beyond about two hours of driving from your base. Whitespark experts also score a service area wider than two hours as a negative, with a suspension risk of 82. Our suspended Google Business Profile guide covers what to do if a profile is restricted. See the service-area business guide for the full setup rules.

One detail needs care. Experts rank "address is showing on GBP (not SAB)" 7th, which suggests a visible address helps. Google tells a service-area business without a storefront to hide its address, and Whitespark scores showing an address as a service-area business with a suspension risk of 105. We follow Google's rule.

Do

Hide a home address. Keep your pin at your real location. Set a service area you can truly reach in about two hours.

Do not

Show a home address to gain rank. Use a P.O. box or an unstaffed virtual office. List cities you do not serve.

Judgment call: If your competitors show an address and you hide yours, you may rank lower near their street. We still advise following Google's rule, because a suspended profile ranks nowhere.

What does Google show about your Maps performance?

Google shows how people found and used your profile, and it does not show your ranking position. The performance page lists searches, views, calls, directions and website clicks.

What should a contractor fix first to rank higher in Google Maps?

Fix the items a contractor controls that experts score highest, in this order. The order is our judgment from the expert scores, not a Google ranking.

  1. Primary categoryChoose the one category that matches your main service. Experts rank it first.
  2. Business nameUse your real name exactly as it appears on your truck and invoices. Add no keywords.
  3. HoursSet correct hours, including special hours. Experts rank "open at time of search" 5th.
  4. Map pin and addressPlace the pin at your real base and hide the address if you work from home.
  5. ReviewsAsk every finished customer and reply to every review. Use our Google review calculator to set a target.
  6. Extra categories and servicesAdd the ones that truly fit, and no more.

Our Google Business Profile checklist walks through every field, and Google Business Profile optimization is the service version. Our guide on whether Google reviews help SEO covers the review factors in depth.

Which Google Maps ranking claims should you not trust?

Distrust any claim that gives an exact radius, count or weight without a method. We read five popular guides on this topic. Most of their numbers had no linked source, and some contradicted Google.

Common claimWhy we do not repeat it
"Search radius is under 3 miles in cities and up to 15 miles in rural areas."The guide that gave it linked no source or method. Distance depends on the search and the searcher.
"Get 2 to 3 reviews a week and keep a 4.5 rating."No source given. Google publishes no review count, rate or rating that ensures a rank.
"Add your service and city to your business name."Google says unnecessary information in the name is not permitted and can lead to suspension.
"Click-through rate and calls move your ranking."Experts score click-through rate 13th, and we found no Google statement of such a link. The guide that claimed it showed no data.
"Add every nearby city to your service area."Experts rank the setting 152nd, and Google limits the area to about two hours of driving.

Each claim on this page carries its type: what Google says, what experts rank, or our judgment.

What can we do, and what can we not promise?

We improve the Maps ranking factors a contractor controls, and we cannot promise a position, calls or jobs. Distance and competitors are outside our control, and Google decides who ranks.

Our ranking refund covers agreed map pack and organic ranking targets only, reviewed at six months by default. AI answer visibility is reported but excluded. See pricing for plans from $1,000 a month, or our HVAC local SEO services if you run a heating and cooling company.

Who is this guide not for?

This guide is not for owners who want to fake locations, add keywords to a business name or buy reviews to jump the ranking. Google prohibits each of them and can suspend the profile. If you want an honest read of where you rank, request an audit.

Google Maps ranking FAQ

How does Google Maps ranking work?

Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well a profile matches the search, distance is how far the business is from the searcher, and prominence is how well known the business is.

Why do I rank differently in different parts of town?

Distance from the searcher is part of the ranking, so the order changes with the searcher's position. Check your rank from several points, not one.

What is the most important Google Maps ranking factor?

Google does not name one. In the Whitespark 2026 expert survey, the primary Business Profile category ranked first and searcher distance ranked second.

Can I pay to rank higher in Google Maps?

No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.

Does a bigger service area help me rank?

Experts rank setting service areas 152nd of the map pack and Maps factors, and Google says the area should not extend far beyond about two hours of driving.

Does Google show my Maps ranking?

No. Google shows searches, views, calls, directions and website clicks, and it does not report your position. You check rank yourself from several points.
